COLLECTION I
About Collection I
“Every picture is a venture on a voyage of discovery. Embark on it with fresh eyes and there’s no telling what one might bring home from such a journey.” E.H. Gombrich, History of Art
The current display of work on this blog - Collection 1, consists of intensely coloured abstracts inspired by the cities of the world and my love for varied cultures and their people. During my extensive travels I often lost myself in every culture I experienced, only to rediscover a new me, and each re-acquaintance enabled me to imbibe new ideas, shapes, themes, and colours.
Each painting, with its atypical colours and shapes, summons the viewer into imaginative worlds both strange and familiar. They endeavour to fulfill the innate human need for mystery, serenity and beauty. Every colour and its combination has a meaning and a unique vibrational frequency; nothing is random or without meaning.
Collection 1 solely comprises of seascapes and landscapes in different types of abstract or contemporary forms of art. It has a mix of textural as well as non textural works.
About the Artworks
The Lost City
From the makers of the movie Tomb Raider to countless other researchers and archeologists, Angkor has inspired many, including myself. 'The Lost City' of Angkor was painted on canvas after my visit to Cambodia in 2004. My guide, a Mr. X (his real name) had lost all his family during Pol Pots cruel regime. He spoke very highly of his people and Angkor, but with mixed emotions commented, 'A thousand years ago, Cambodia was to the world what America is to the world today'. That statement touched me and reminded me of Buddha, who once said 'A thousand years a city, a thousand years a jungle'. The Lost City of Angkor is a living example.

Shimmering Sunrise
‘Shimmering Sunrise’ has been inspired by the reflections of the Sun on the myriad sand dunes of UAE. The interplay between sunlight and sand is a sight to behold both during dawn and dusk. In this painting I have tried to capture the shimmering light of the morning sun on the sand and the sand particles that float in the deserts of this region.

Emerald Sea Sunset
The gorgeous backwaters of Kerala (India) have been my inspiration for 'Emerald Sea Sunset'. I have been to Kerala many times, but during a particular visit when traveling by boat, we came upon the area where the backwaters merged with the ocean. The reflections of the dense mangroves during sunset had turned the entire backwaters into beautiful shade of emerald green. Only the last chirps of a few birds retiring for the night broke the unparalleled serenity of that mystical sight.

Mixed Media. 26 X 18 inches. Framed.
I Stand Alone
'I Stand Alone’ is my portrayal of the loneliness experienced in the harsh desert. A desolate tree, surviving in the middle of vast emptiness whilst all else has perished. The tree is representative of the soul on the solitary path to self realization, a path that it has to undertake itself, and by itself alone.

The Long Way Home
In order for birds to survive in the desert they have to travel great distances for food and water. The painting captures a bird taking respite on a branch, while making its long way back home. The contemplative bird in front of the setting sun, amidst the quiet dusky glow, is symbolic of the soul’s meditations on its journey so far.

Backwaters of Kerala
Both the 'Backwaters of Kerala' and 'Emerald Sea Sunset' have been inspired by my trips to the backwaters of Kerala (India). During this particular visit, I was travelling by boat to a resort. It was a cloudy night and the there was barely any moonlight. I was inspired by the shades of blue that I witnessed that night and those shaded led me to create this piece of work.
